10 Times Tears of Happiness

While traveling I saw many beautiful things, experienced amazing moments and shared them with some of the best people in the world (#sharingiscaring). Curious about the best things I did? Read this post! BUT: photo’s are photo’s, and words are words, you just should’ve been there!

1. Watching sunrise on a pagoda in Bagan, Myanmar

Bagan is an ancient city in Myanmar and counts over 2.000 pagoda’s! Me and my friends found a pagoda for ourselves, climbed on it and watched the sunrise. The bike ride in the dark and through the sand was hell but the sunrise was magical! The silence was amazing and the view breathtaking.

2. Doing THE loop in Laos

Thakek Loop Laos   Thakhek Loop Laos

The Thakhek loop in Laos is a 3-4 day 500km loop you can ride on your motorbike. Along the way we stopped to visit beautiful caves and waterfalls. The amazing view started almost immediately after we left Thakhek. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I was surrounded by the most beautiful limestone mountains. This was even better than what I expected Laos to be like! Driving through the mountains for hours, eating noodlesoup for breakfast, lunch and dinner and doing a homestay was an amazing experience. The loop includes the Konglor Cave that has a 7,5km river flowing through it, gorgeous!

3. Being by myself in Angkor Wat

Many tourists visit Angkor Wat at sunrise, we definitely weren’t the only one there. Almost immediately after arriving I lost my friends in the crowd outside the temple and I was by myself. I decided to enter the ruin before all the other people did. The feeling I had walking there is indescribable, but I’ll try. The building is huge, old and cold but it feels safe and warm. I sat there, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin and hearing nothing but silence. The temple made me feel so small, I was overwhelmed by it.

4. Sitting in a minivan/bus/train watching the scenery and thinking about life

Everything happens so fast while traveling. Everyday you do new stuff, see new things and meet new people. You don’t have the time to overthink it all. Except when you’re in the buss to your next destination, looking out of the window and listening to some music (be it the overdramatic karaoke music). Every time I realized how privileged I am that I can experience this. Traveling is such a great thing, it made me the happiest I’ve ever been! I wish everyone could have that feeling at least once.

5. Tubing in Vang Vieng (partying with the best view)!

Floating in a tube on the river with a cocktail in my hand and the most beautiful view! Unfortunately I don’t have a photo of the view because: WATER! Don’t take any valuable belongings with you because you’ll lose them or find out the waterproof bag you bought is not that waterproof… While floating on the river we got pulled into four different bars where we played drinkinggames as beerpong or flipcup, got dirty while playing mud volley and danced our asses off on some old hits. But the best thing was the landscape yo!

6. Riding a motorbike through Phong Nha National Park (yep, even despite my fall)

A lot of people skip Phong Nha because it’s not on their route but it’s one of the most beautiful places I saw in Southeast Asia. My Honda Win (#YOLO) sometimes had a hard time riding uphill but riding my motorbike through Vietnam gave me a feeling of freedom! It was a great feeling you can go anywhere you want to go. Phong Nha has the limestone mountains I’m obsessed with so it was a paradise for me. The park has some really cool caves as well, it’s definitely worth the ride!

7. Everytime I drank a mangoshake

8. Celebrating New Year’s Eve at the beach of Koh Phi Phi

Because I live in the Netherlands I always celebrate Christmas and NYE in a cold, dark and rainy place. NYE at Koh Phi Phi beach (Thailand) was the best ever! Thousands of happy people, nice music, beautiful firework and a lot of buckets. At 12 o’clock I cried tears of happiness while I watched the firework. That night I lost all my friends and my money but I guess that’s how you know it was a good party!

9. Visiting Myanmar, period.

The best thing of Myanmar is the people. In this country I met the most friendly, modest and happy people. I’ll never forget an old woman sitting on the ground, selling some fried food. I bought something (I think it was 0,10 eurocents) and let my friends taste it. They liked it and they all bought from her. She was sold out and started making some new food in her pan with oil. We had to wait for the bus so after 15 minutes I came back to buy some more. She gave me what I asked for and refused to accept my money. I didn’t understand, for me the money was nothing and for her it seemed a lot so I insist her to take my money. Then she gave me all the food she had. I couldn’t believe she gave me so much and didn’t want anything in return. It broke my heart and I realized I should be more like her, we all should be more like her!

10. Swimming with bioluminescent plankton

Definitely one of the best nights of my trip! One night at Long Beach Koh Rong we went skinny dipping in the sea and swam between the glowing plankton. When we looked up we looked at a sky full of stars. At that moment I wanted to be there forever. Nature is the most beautiful thing I realized, we should treasure it.
